As many of you will be aware, a momentous event in the history of Dundrum mercantile activity, for Orwell Wheelers and, indeed, for Irish cycling will occur this coming Monday with the retirement of David “The Docket” Tansey from Joe Daly Cycles.

It seems appropriate to mark the occasion with a short tribute to a man whose calm diligence in his business life has been seamlessly interwoven with a selfless and unbroken support for Orwell Wheelers which stretches back to the 1970s.

From midnight 7th of August for a 2-week period, a number of temporary additional restrictions come into place impacting Kildare, Laois and Offaly. In addition to the Orwell 2 2 2 Rule, the training and event protocols already in place and the CI registration requirements, our club position on training and events is extended to include the following:

We have safely navigated Phase 2 of the gradual return to cycling thanks to the commitment and efforts of everyone in the club. As a club, we welcome the easing of restrictions supported by Government and Cycling Ireland that commenced June 29th 2020.....If you are leading a group training spin or event that was organised through the club forum, WhatsApp groups or any club channel there are a number of new steps you need to follow as outlined below.

We have now entered Phase 2 in the easing of lockdown conditions we have all experienced since the middle of March. As a club Orwell suspended all club activities in line with Government and Cycling Ireland recommendations over the last 3 months and we very much appreciate the effort and commitment members have demonstrated throughout this time. This position continues throughout phase 2 in line with Cycling Ireland guidance which states that ‘Club training protocol will be advised in Phase 3’. Reflecting this there will be no organised club activities during June pending publication of guidelines for Phase 3, which is not far away now  - due to start on June 29th.

It's hard to believe that we have reached the June Bank Holiday weekend and none of us have been to places like Laragh, Wicklow Gap, Luggala or Blessington Lakes since the lockdown began. This would traditionally have been the final training weekend for the Wicklow 200 and the Orwell 2 Day Stage Race but instead, we are all still restricted to cycling within 5k of home.

On May 15th Cycling Ireland released their "Roadmap for Reopening Cycling Activity". We will be entering Phase 1 of this roadmap on Monday the 18th of May. Read on for details of Phase 1 and a link to the Roadmap/CI Statement
