Club league 2018 Round 1 Pine forest TT

The 2018 club league is kicking off this Thursday with the Pine forest prologue TT. This is the same course as has been used for the past five years, and has proven a popular starting point.

The course is just short of 5K, and rises gradually for the first 4 of that before kicking up sharply in the final kilometre. Mapmyride link .

As always we will be using online registration for the Time Trials, using a dedicated thread here. The first rider will be off at 19:00. A start list will be published the night before giving your start time, so you should show make sure you know when your own start is, and show up to the start line at least 3 minutes before your start time.

There is to be no warming up on the course, so when you are ready to go you should spin down to the start, and do any further warming up in the area of Glencullen village.

TT bikes/wheels and aero kit are all allowed, though they won't provide a massive advantage on this course. I strongly recommend using a rear light, as it will be getting dark as later finishers are returning.

If you catch another rider (good for you!) check that there is no traffic coming up behind you before pulling out, and give them loads of room as you pass. Remember they may have no notion that you're steaming through until you have actually passed them. On the other hand, if you are caught, keep on going at your own pace, don't be tempted to try sit on to the rider who has passed you.

When you cross the finish line roll on through, pull over further down the road and don't turn around before checking that it is safe to do so. Anyone doing a U-turn in the vicinity of the finish line will be disqualified. Please don't hassle the timekeepers for your time- there's no problem asking, but make sure to do it at a time when there aren't any riders coming in.

There are placings (points) for the 6 fastest riders in each ability group, so 24 placings to compete for altogether, but beyond that every finisher will get a time, so no matter how badly you think you might fare it will be worth your while giving this one a blast.

In addition, this is the first counting round of the BAR (best all rounder) competition based on the league time trials, so effectively a time trial league within the league. This will be based on the average speeds from all of the club TTs, so more important for that than doing a real fast time is to not do any bad times.

No, there is no arranged parking. Ideally people would cycle up, but if anyone does need to drive up I would suggest parking at Cruagh car park beyond the finish line, or else park in Kilternan and cycle up from there.

There is to be absolutely no parking on the road or around the start finish areas.

Thank you very much to all of the helpers and marshals, it was not a nice evening to be standing out on a mountainside, and particularly to Shane Toman who got a baptism of fire as my assistant timekeeper on the trickiest event of the year, and who did a fine job after the early panic.

Well done to all of the riders who took part, particularly the ones who knocked minutes off their course PBs.

I haven't checked hundredths yet, those times are still provisional. With getting kids to bed and getting ready for school in the morning I haven't had time to download the watch, so there may be a number of small changes before they are final.

Eoin Byrne has beaten Eric Downey's old course record by 28" for a new senior men's record of 7'41";
Breda Horan beat Aideen Keenan's club record for the course by 9", with a time of 9'29". 8 years on Mel Spath's women's course record of 9'20" remains untouchable, for now...;

Balasz Galambos took 51" off Philippe Bourdarias' men's vet record with a time of 8'03";
Charlotte Stevens beat Monica Marconi's women's vet record by 17", with a time of 9'38";

Ruairi Byrne took 1'21" off Ronan O'Connor's under 14 record with a 9'12";
And Oisin May knocked 1'41" off Ruairi's under 12 record with a time of 10'54".

In case anyone is doubting whether it was a fast night or not, every single rider who had ridden the course before PBed, and the average improvement was 1'07".

Apologies to all at the top of the table, I had given Barry a minute off what was already a very fast time. All results above are now checked and final.
