THE DUBLIN/MEATH/KILDARE ORWELL 200KM AUDAX
Sunday 4th March 2018

HERE is the link to event page
www.audaxireland.org/events-calendar/gaz...hkildare-orwell-200/

Closing date for registration is 23rd Feb. 7:00am is the start time and the time limit is 13.5 hours, e.g. to finish before 8:30 pm.

This Audax is a beginner friendly route aimed at first-timers. Navigation is (mostly) as straightforward as could be, and the route could almost be called “Flattest possible 200” if it weren’t for a number of short sharp lumps on the approach to the finish.

The route starts and finishes at Joe Daly’s; it is a total of 208.03 km and has a total ascent of 957.86m and has a maximum elevation of 202.38 m.

Entry Fee €5, plus €5 for optional ACP or Audax Ireland Medal if required. Please include the extra PayPal fee.

There is always a big turnout from Orwell members- with lots of pace options from white to red. We are limiting it to 100 entries. Of note an Audax is a self- supported event, i.e. no support car on route. Unlike the W100/200 event. However I’m sure if you form a group – no one will be left stranded.

If you are interested in joining, or setting up a group please post on this forum the thread.

Cheers,
Leonard

EXTRACTED FROM AUDAX IRELAD:

Audax is a form of long-distance cycling – riders strive to complete lengthy and often arduous routes within specified time limits. Along the route each rider will have a card (known as a brevet card) stamped at a series of checkpoints demonstrating that each checkpoint has been reached in good time. The time limits are quite generous, being determined by a minimum average speed of 15km/h which is well within the capabilities of any moderately fit cyclist – as with most endurance sports, the challenge lies in possessing the determination to carry on when tiredness starts to attack you.

The culture of audax prizes self-reliance – routes are not marked, and typically riders navigate from a routesheet giving turn by turn instructions. There are no support vehicles and if you go off course or experience a mechanical, you are expected to take responsibility for finding your own way home and making your own repairs on the road. On some events there may be some food provided at the checkpoints but by and large you feed yourself from shops and cafes along the way.

The flip side of this is that audax is non-competitive and we actively promote a sociable, inclusive, co-operative atmosphere on the rides. To match the minimum average pace, there is a maximum average pace (to discourage racing) and finishing times are not published – all finishers are considered equal and it’s widely recognised that the achievement is all the greater for those who struggled to finish within the time limit.

Hi all.

Numbers for the Dublin / Meath / Kildare / Orwell 200 are filling up so please get your entries in soon - remember the closing date is Friday 23 Feb.

Previous posts on this thread will point you to the application form etc.

Quite a few entry fees are coming in light due to PayPal fees getting deducted meaning fewer biscuits for everyone.

Please remember to send the payment using the "Sending to friends and family" option to begin with.

If you pay using PayPal and you have credit or your PayPal account is linked directly to your bank account - that is perfect and we should receive the full fee and it won't cost you an additional charge.

For other scenarios e.g. using a PayPal / debit card combination please check out the link below:
www.paypal.com/ie/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside

Thanks a million.

Hi Donal
We hope to get a communication to all participants out tonight.
Basically it’s wait and see and decide Saturday and communicate the decision via email.
As of last night per Met Eireann the weather was improving after Thursday with Sunday looking ok.

IMPORTANT NEWS

Hi all please see below an important message from the the DMK Orwell 200 organising team.

Hi all,

We are sure most of you who have entered this weekend's Orwell 200 are waiting to hear news of a cancellation or otherwise as you sit out the weather.

While it certainly doesn't look promising today we are still holding out a hope that the event will go ahead on Sunday. We are watching the weather reports and road conditions, and will be making a decision on whether to cancel or not at lunchtime tomorrow.

Be aware that if it is safe to run the event we will do so regardless of how tough or unpleasant the conditions might be.However if we believe that the conditions will be dangerous then we will have no choice but to cancel.

All the best for now.

The Organising team.

Another update from the Audax organising committee and unfortunately it is not good news. These decisions are tough but made with all the information available and the safety of participants foremost in their thoughts.

Hi all,
Unfortunately we have had to make the decision to cancel this year's Orwell 200, in light of the deteriorating weather situation on significant parts of the route. This isn't a decision we have made lightly, but it is now clear that much of the route will not be safe to cycle by Sunday.

We are currently looking at our options for transferring entries or providing refunds and will get back on to you as soon as possible about that.

We hope you all have a safe weekend wherever you are, whether you get out on the bike or not.

Regards,
The organising committee

Hi all on the committee, if the Audax is moved, will there be an opportunity to enter for the new date? Would love to have participated tomorrow, but i’m away, and would love to try it out on any possible rerun.

Thanks
Alan

Hi Alan
Yes entering on a new date should not a problem.
We’ll be trying a few options to seek a rescheduling but for now the options are limited.
Keep an eye on the forum to stay in the loop.

Hi everyone

We're happy to confirm that the Orwell 200 will now take place on Sunday 18th March following last week's cancellation due to bad weather.

All other event details remain the same.

Note that a small number of places remain available on the rescheduled event and
when those are filled, entry will be closed.

Thanks to Audax Ireland, Killorglin Cycling Club, Cycling Ireland and the Orwell
committee for allowing us the opportunity to reschedule the event.

We look forward to seeing you on the 18th.

The organising team.
