70-90k route around Galway? was created by Max-Emanuel Vingerhoets
Hey guys,

I'll be in the abovementioned regions/cities over the next few weeks.

Do any of you have good round routes between 60-100k?

I won't be able to attend the WW200 trainings on those Saturdays, so I wanted to get in some KM while I'm on the road as I will bring my bike with me.

Any links/Strava would be much appreciated!

All the best,
Max

Fergal sent you a link on Connemara.
Here are other great spins in Connemara though you'll have to check the km.They work very well for bike touring especially.
1.
Westport-Louisburgh-Leenaun via Doo Lough-Westport via direct route.
2.
Leenane-Renvyle Peninsula-Letterfrack-Leenaun
3.
Letterfrack-Clifden via Sky Road into Clifden-Bog Road out of Clifden-Inagh Valley-Letterfrack.
V quirky hostel in Letterfrack = old school house if you are close.

Max,

check out the websites of local cycling clubs or contact bike shops in the relevant areas ( not at weekends when they are busy). I have found them to be extremely helpful in suggesting routes as they are cyclists themselves.

Sincerely,

Peter

Hi Max

Below is my favourite route around Killarney. If you take out the bits to and from Tralee it will come in at around 100km. It brings you through the Gap of Dunlow, Ballaghbeama pass and Caragh lake. The majority of the route is on old country roads with very little traffic.

On your way back just follow the n72 from Killorglin to Killarney instead of continuing on to Tralee. This is well sign posted.

The below link describes part of the route.

Guys, those are amazing routes for Killarney and Connemara! Wow, can't wait to go there now!

Only thing I'm missing now is a route from Limerick city around 100k :)

I have one around Lough Derg (thanks Kevin!), but not sure if I should go to Killaloe by car for that. So let me know if you guys have anything - Strava always welcome!

Thanks for your input so far, guys!
This past weekend was great - I went around Lough Derg, allthough the 113 by myself were quite tough.

I created a route on strava for Killarney based on Sean's suggestion - I'll be there on the coming weekend (I'll join you guys again the week after!)

Would you mind checking it out and telling me what you think? I took a little shortcut compared to Sean's route and wanted to know your opinion, especially since I don't know the roads over there.

Hi Max

Your new route is perfect.

The only reason I had suggested continuing on was for the loop around caragh lake but your route will mean you stay off the main road for 90% of your cycle.

Let me know how you get on.

So, Limerick and Killarney are marked off - you guys gave me superb routes!

I have more details about my trip to Connemara now - it looks like I will have to start and end the spin in Galway.

If anyone has a route you can recommend, around 70-90k, that would be fantastic!

Hi Max,

There's three routes that might be good:
  1. Moycullen, Oughterard, Rossaveal, Spidal, Bearna , or the reverse will make the climb steeper and it'll be broken into three ramps. If it's windy, this is probably best avoided.
  2. Around Lough Corrib .
  3. Go south into the Clare hills .

Roads are very narrow, and the posted speed limits are 80 - 100kmh and the cars will pass you very close.

As I told you Saturday, I'll be away when you're down.
Enjoy.

Here's one I like to do when I stay in spiddal
connect.garmin.com/modern/course/12300573
It's fairly flat but the scenery is excellent on a nice day.
Oh and as mentioned the roads are narrow and the drivers are nutters.
