This talk is not just geared towards the racers in the club but towards anyone who wants to challenge themselves on the bike. There are many tough sportives eg Marmotte,Etape, Wicklow 200 or Mick Byrne 200 that certainly require mental toughness in order to complete.
Mental toughness is vital for all cyclists regardless of level/ability.
The talk will cost 10 euro and will take place in Ballinteer Community School at 7.30pm on Monday 22nd February.
Please sign up for the talk on this thread.
Do you admire the determination of the Worlds top athletes? When you watch them perform under pressure and pull off astonishing performances, do you ever wonder what they’re thinking about to be able to go through the pain barrier when it absolutely matters?
Would you like to be able to hang in there for longer when the speed goes up or the hill keeps climbing?
Athletes who possess extreme mental toughness traits have developed a psychological edge that enables them to:
• Manage the pressure of racing better than their fellow competitors.
• Perform more consistently and better than their fellow competitors by
remaining steadfast and completely focused on what they want to achieve and what they are doing.
Many people mistakenly believe that mental toughness is something only top class athletes possess. Still others think that it’s a God given gift bestowed on a blessed few. But this is simply not true.
On this course participants learn what mental toughness is and are guided through a step-by-step process so that they are better able to control thoughts, emotions and behaviours allowing them to “dig deep” when it really matters.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will:
• Understand what mental toughness is.
• Know what top athletes do to block out extreme discomfort.
• Find out what concentration is and how to stay focused under pressure.
• Develop a 5 step plan to build mental toughness and concentration
through training.
• Learn how to bounce back from failure and set backs.

This talk clashes with the Intro to Post Winter Spins event at the Cavern.
Which is the better one to go?
Apologies about that Greg.
Alan Heary's mental toughness talk would be beneficial to all levels of cyclist from total beginner to Ras rider.
I think W100/200 training groups night is more geared towards newer members who are finding their feet in the club.
So to answer your question I think Alan Heary's talk would be the better one to go to.

I was at the last talk and would love to go to this talk but it clashes with the Cavern meeting, which I need to go to as I am doing the Marmotte - is there a possibility that Alan's final talk can be postponed?
Thanks, Peter
