Dear Club Members,
We have been approached by a number of equine groups in the Wicklow area with a request in relation to health and safety.
When a horse can see cyclists approaching from the front there is generally never any issue.
However as cycling groups tend to be relatively quiet the horses can become startled and may bolt when passed unexpectedly from behind.
When approaching a horse or group or horses from behind please slow down and the lead cyclist should shout a warning to the horse rider. The rider will calm the horse or turn it to face the hedgerow as the cycling group passes. Please pass in single file and leave as much room as possible.
As we all need to share the road in a safe manner please adhere to the above guideline.
Yours sincerely,
Damian Doyle.
