Orla Hendron at the National Team Trial Championships

Congratulations and commiserations in equal measure are being extended to Orla Hendron after her superb ride in the National Time Trial Championships in Castlebar on Saturday once again just failed to net her a medal.

'Supervet' is a somewhat over used term these days but it's well applied to Hendron whose status as the outstanding woman veteran cyclist in the nation was reaffirmed in Mayo with fourth fastest overall time for the second year in a row, this time a scant 17 seconds slower than the bronze medallist, Heather Boyle.

As yet Cycling Ireland doesn't award medals for women's veteran racing which perhaps is just as well for the creaking trophy cabinet at Hendron-Tansey towers.

In a weekend of 'what ifs?' for Orwell, the track sprint team of Eddie Lynch, Gary McNulty and Stephen McNally finished a fine fourth in the inaugural Team Sprint National Championships at Sundrive Road and vowed to target the event with some specialist training next season.
