Darragh on the Double

Darragh Long was the class of the Under 14 field on both Saturday and Sunday in the Stamullen Cycling festival, his brace of victories headlining a strong weekend for Orwell riders.

Racing clear of the pack with Shane O’Hara of Limerick, Long had enough in hand to take the sprint for his second victory of the season. He made it a hat trick the following day, once again leading O’Hara in for the win in Stamullen.

In the Under 12 races, Rachael Kaye Mellor finished second overall and first girl on both days. On Sunday she was followed home by younger brother Timothy who scored an excellent fourth place finish on the testing, hilly course while first year Under 16 Craig Arrigan raced to fifth on Saturday.

Friday evening’s Brendan Carroll Memorial kicked off the three-day festival of racing where Gary McNulty continued his rehabilitation from recent injury and illness with a powerful finish that netted second unplaced A2. Declan Quigley unleashed his trademark single-speed stealth gallop to take the first prime and went on to annexe second unplaced A4.

In the prizes on Saturday was Colm Ahern who shook off the rust of a long layoff with third unplaced A2 in the Pat and Monie Nolan Memorial race in Balscadden. First year racer and stat fiend John Latham had his power meter calibrated to perfection on the way to third unplaced A4.

Competitors in Sunday’s Stamullen GP races enjoyed improbably sunny weather for the second year in a row and John Dillon produced a performance to match last year’s sixth place in the Veteran’s race when he finished eighth in the Pat Howard Memorial race for A3s. Martin Caddow was just two places further back after another strong performance.

In the main race for A1/A2 riders Ódhran Connors started more in hope than expectation after recent illness but managed to complete the 120km event 12th of the unplaced A2 riders.

Meanwhile on the other side of Meath, Romano Morelli  was part of a strong white number group that held off the yellow and black numbers while overhauling all the groups ahead in the Dick O’Brien IVCA CP at Batterstown. Romano produced his well developed finishing kick to finish sixth.
