Congratulations to Lara Gillespie who has won 3 silver medals this week at the European Junior Track Championships in Ghent.

Less than a month after finishing her Leaving Cert Lara was back in action on this week on the European stage.  In the Scratch Race Lara on the opening day of competition in Gent, Belgium Lara won the silver medal behind Polish rider Nikola Wielowska.  Taking the bronze medal was Maike Van der Duin of the Netherlands, with Eluned King of Great Britain in 4th place.

On Thursday Lara made the final of the Individual Pursuit and faced Elynor Backstedt of GB in the gold/silver race.  Lara was narrowly beaten by Backstedt in the final. Elynor was only 2/10 of a second off a world record! Lara’s time of 2:21.579 this evening earned her the silver medal, a personal best and a new national record.

On Saturday Lara competed in the Points race and again put in a fantastic performance to win the silver. Lara was in the middle of the field with 2 sprints to go and moved into 4th when she won the second last sprint. She moved up into the silver medal position when she claimed the final sprint.
